Happy Holidays from Recycle NB
The Holidays are upon us.
Brightly coloured lights decorate our homes and streets, people are loaded down with parcels and packages, and everywhere you go, Christmas tunes are playing.
To quote one of the more popular ones, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”
In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, have you been thinking that you would like to celebrate the Holidays more sustainably this year? If so, here are a few great ideas for you to try.
First, make a decision not to use traditional gift wrapping and bows. Instead, use scrap fabrics or old scarves or napkins. Better yet, buy a scarf and a set of napkins and have them be part of the gift. Treehugger.com (https://www.treehugger.com/eco-friendly-alternatives-wrapping-paper-4858648) has some great ideas and even a tutorial on how to tie a festive bow.
Second, buy local or give gifts of local experiences. How about a couple of tickets to one of New Brunswick’s charming – and historic – theatres or playhouses? You are not only supporting a business in your community, you are supporting local actors as well. Pair the tickets with a gift card to one of our many fabulous restaurants. You can also stop by a gallery or craft fair and buy something from a New Brunswick artisan.
Third, be mindful of energy consumption when lighting your tree or home. Try to limit the number of hours the lights are on each day. Not only will this save energy, but your monthly power bill will thank you. Speaking of NB Power, they have some good energy-saving tips for your home on their website: https://www.nbpower.com/en/save-energy/tips?fbclid=IwAR2_c1-fz2QLRuAo5dz-Gq1Rgi3y2vwYezfrzkNtu4bjWEWfFMonkT79w6k
Finally – and this is the most important tip – be sure to have fun. Enjoy some rest and relaxation, and the company of the people you love most in this world. They are, after all, the ones who sustain us all year long.
