Celebrating our successes

2023 Annual Report highlights impressive statistics

We wanted to showcase our 2023 Annual Report this month, because we think it has some pretty impressive statistics. As always, it provides highlights of the previous year, including the quantity of designated materials that were collected and recycled in New Brunswick:

  • 1,243,670 tires collected.
  • 281,541 litres of paint collected.
  • 3,332,788 litres of oil and 149,946 litres of glycol collected.
  • 895 metric tonnes of electronics collected.
  • 176,785 kilograms of packaging and paper products collected.

All of the materials listed above, with the exception of tires, are collected through Extended Producer Responsibility programs. As such, those who manufacture, sell or distribute these materials in New Brunswick are obligated to set up collection sites and arrange to have them recycled or processed. The tire recycling program is funded by the environmental fees that consumers pay when purchasing new tires.

It’s important to note that while we work with industry to put these provincial recycling programs in place, ultimately it is you – New Brunswickers – who deserve the credit for keeping these materials out of our landfills. You sort, rinse, flatten and fold. You ensure everything stays clean and dry. You load boxes and bags of your recyclables into your vehicle and take them to collection sites. It’s a lot of work, and you deserve a lot of credit. Thank you!

One more thing about our annual report. In it, we also make note of what’s on the horizon with respect to waste management in New Brunswick. Next year, in addition to the materials noted above, we will have statistics on the number of pharmaceutical products, medical sharps and beverage containers collected, since both of those recycling programs launched in 2024. Additionally, in the long term, we will have statistics on batteries and lightbulbs, because effective July 15, 2024, they were added as EPR programs to the Designated Materials Regulation. Stay tuned for more about those recycling programs in the coming months.

Happy recycling!
