Exciting milestones in the year ahead
Happy New Year everyone! We hope you all enjoyed the Holidays and were able to spend some quality time with family and friends.
As we ring in the New Year, we would like to highlight some exciting milestones that we can look forward to in 2024. The year will kick off with a bang as we launch the Extended Producer Responsibility program for pharmaceutical products and medical sharps. As it stands now, approximately 50 pharmacies throughout the province are designated collection sites for your unused medications and used medical sharps. You can drop off these items free of charge so that they can be managed responsibly. If not disposed of properly, they pose a serious threat to our ecosystems.
The next milestone for 2024 will be the transition of the beverage container program to Extended Producer Responsibility. This will happen in April, at which time Encorp Atlantic – the organization representing producers – will assume responsibility for managing the program in New Brunswick. Their goal will be to increase public engagement in the beverage container program, and therefore increase recovery rates. Stay tuned for more details about this initiative.
Finally in 2024, the second phase of the provincial packaging and paper program will begin. By November, communities in eastern regions will be able to recycle more items such as glass jars and food packaging. More information will be available on this program this spring.
As you can see, there is lots to look forward to in 2024. As always, thank you for taking the time to recycle designated materials. You are making a difference for generations to come.
Happy New Year everyone!
